Wallis Bird, Mainz 2006

Diese Seite gibt es auch auf deutsch.

Pictures of the Wallis Bird concert on October 2, 2006 at Kasematte Mainz.

For Wallis and her band, for Fiach, for Aoife (and for Diana from NC) I try to publish this site also in (what I call) english. I hope it is a little better to understand than these funny automatic Google translations. But even if you don't understand my english: Please have fun with the pictures!

Because of the SWR3 New Pop Festival the irish singer and songwriter Wallis Bird toured through the south west of Germany. For us, the nearest concert hall was Mainz, and so we drove 2 hours by car to meet Wallis. It was a great concert in a small location, and it was absolutely worth travelling to Mainz.

Before starting her concert, Wallis introduced Fiach, who is a high talented irish singer, songwriter and guitar player.

Unfortunately I left my digital single-lens reflex camera at home. (No idea if it would have been allowed to use it at the concert...) So the pics on this site don't have a very high quality, because I used only my compact digital camera. These cameras produce more image noise at higher ISO speed settings than my EOS 20D would have done. And the light was low. Whoever wants to view better pictures of Wallis' concerts in germany should click on the above link to SWR3. :-) But for all Wallis fans who also want to view pictures of the Mainz concert, I put my photos online here.

After some beautiful songs of Fiach, Wallis Bird began with her concert. She speaks a little german (very nice dialect...), and so she introduced herself as "Waltraud Vogel". :-) Vogel is the german word for bird.

Part of Wallis band are the drummer Christian Vinne and the bass player Michael Vinne. We got a place directly in front of the stage. This was great for taking photos, but the direct sound of the drum set was a little tooooo loud there. I guess (and hope) in the rear of the room the sound was better.

We came to know Wallis Bird after they played her powerful song "Blossoms In The Street" on the radio. Her guitar playing is extraordinary, because she plays a right hand guitar holding it 'wrong', with the bass strings downsides. That's the way she learned it for herself, because when she was very young, she hat a serious injury at her left hand.

Isn't she cute, isn't she sweet, this little irish girl? If I were about 150 years younger, I would ask her for some left hand guitar lessons... :-)
Wallis 'won' her audience not only with her great guitar playing and with her beautiful voice, but also with her sympathetic and genuine way to communicate with her guests. And with a power that cannot be shown on the photos, because I had to wait for the calmer moments to avoid blur. Wallis has powerful rock songs and also slower ballads in her program.

Here you see Wallis with her bass man.

Wallis Bird brought also her band photographer Aoife O' Sullivan to Germany, who (according to SWR3) is also her best friend and her Muse. In between Aoife lay her EOS 5D aside and she became the background singer for Wallis:

Then Fiach was called again on the stage to play a wonderful ballad. Wallis and Aoife sang the background vocals and yearned for Fiach... :-)

After Fiach's ballad Wallis and her band played again. Within one single song she ripped strings of both guitars, and so she took Fiachs guitar.

Maybe Wallis should play as strong strings as this friendly young man uses? ;-)

At the end of this great concert Christian, Wallis and Michael bowed to the audience and got very much applause. After they left the stage, the fastest fans grabbed the setlists. I would have loved to grab also Fiachs guitar and Aoifes camera, but maybe they would not have liked it. ;-) And I hope to meet them again at Wallis' next concert tour in Germany. I guess we all will hear a lot more of Wallis Bird in the future. We hope so, Wallis!
