My holiday 1997: Basilicata (Italy)

The summer vacation 1997 I spent with Giuseppe and his daughters Sabrina and Sara in the small city Policoro, province of Matera, region of Basilicata (in southern Italy, just above the heel of Italy's "boot." This time it was more of a bathing holiday, so I didn't take so much photos. But because many people asked me when the pictures will be on my homepage I decided to make this page.

So this is the beach of Policoro in the later morning. Everything is so hot that those who don't have a sunshade prefer to stay at home. But the beach is really nice and the water is warm enough.

In the summer evenings the promenade is crowded with thousands of people who take an evening walk to see others and to be seen.

Or you go in one of those bars at the seashore, for example in the bar Lido Sirena that is shown here. There really is also a "Punto Internet" (Internet Point) where you can recieve and send email. That is real progress, isn't it? Also there is a telescope with a competent guide to our neighbor planets, and of course beer, pizza, slot machines, etc. - every desire of a tourists heart :-)

Of course this was not all culture that I have snuffled that year: We also have visited Matera, the capital of the province. There we went to the district assembly of Jehovah's Witnesses and of course we also have visited the famous "Sassi" of Matera. The Sassi are unique cave dwellings that have now even been included in the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, safeguarded by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

As you can see the Sassi are partially repopulated. Because the Sassi are described in the "Awake!" magazine of July 8, 1997 I don't describe it here, but I show you some more photos from there:
